The Big 3-0

... which isn't for another 10 months for me, but my dear cousin Ben turns 30 tomorrow and while I am very much looking forward to turning 30, or last week thought I was, I have started to realise that I am no longer 21 and now have to worry about the following things:

1. Wrinkles - is it time to start buying anti-aiging cream and foundation?

2. Continued boob saggage (a HUGE problem for me as they are already heading south at an alarming pace!)

3. "Getting in Shape" - yeah....

4. Reproducing - how old is too old? Do I want to be 50 and still be paying for college?

Seriously.... as much as I was looking forward to this life event... I think I am starting to freak out a little...

My Favorite "Mistakes"

As I enter another phase in my life this weekend I have been pondering past relationships and which ones effected me the most. I have been lucky enough to not end relationships "badly" and have kept in touch with most of my ex's over the years. I have also been able to reflect on each relationship and been able to take valuable lessons from each of them.

From L I learned that it is important to communicate, give each other room, and that it is OK to be individuals as well as a couple. This is my most important past relationship as S immediately followed L.

From M I learned that timing is everything and you have to fight for the ones you love. M, consequently, is my "biggest mistake" that I went back to several times and ended up getting hurt each time (I should have soooo listened to my friends). I recently got back in touch with him and let me tell you he still gives me butterflies and makes me weak in the knees (I sooo hate it that he does!). We have chalked up our time together as a pair of star-crossed lovers who may end up together again in 20 years. Lesson learned here: Never go back, fight for the ones you love, and listen to your friends (they see things you refuse to when you are blinded by "love").

Now, W was my "first". An older, hunky firefighter who taught me all about "adult" relationships and that is it important to grow and learn your life lessons before settling down.

D was my first bf ever. He is a sweetie and he will always hold a special place in my heart. What happened here is I grew up and he didn't and we both ended up feeling that we were babysitting/being baby-sat. Let me tell you though, when I think of it, I can still feel the same knots in my stomach when I did 13 years ago after seeing him kiss someone else just 3 days after ending our 9 month HS relationship.

So... let's tally.... that is about 5 people I have been in love with in my life. Each taught a lesson, and with each I learned something about life. They all hold a special place in my heart and I love them all still to this day; just a little differently.

Big Fat ZERO!

ZERO posts for Feb.... bugger.... Sorry that I haven't been keeping up here. I have three myspaces to check and a livejournal now.

I am in the process of building up my new business. I have two parties this weekend, a party next weekend and a party at the end of the month. I am trying to utilize some great KIT practices that I learned while at GW. I am pondering a "Vendor Appreciation" party and inviting local business women in addition to sending them information about my new venture. I really need to take a day or two and go door to door to women in the area.

Anywho... I hope everyone is doing well!

My New Business

Last week I purchased a new business. I am now a Slumber Parties Distributor -
Shannon M. Marshall
Romance Enhancement Consultant

... Or so my business cards say.

This has been something I have wanted to do for almost two years now. My friend Lisa in Colorado does this for a living. It started out as part time in addition to her real estate business, and she is now a full time distributor who raked in $85,000 in sales last year.

For those of you who don't know, Slumber Parties is a company that does in home parties and distributes bedroom novelties, toys, and romance enhancement products. The parties are for women only (18+) and are done in the comfort of your home. Men can purchase products from me, I just can't do a demonstration party.

So boys, need anything saucy for the bedroom - give me a call, I will hook you up. Ladies, book your party today! (Or just order stuff from me also!)

5 Year Anniversary

Last night was the 5th anniversary from the date that Scott and I met. Since we started "dating" about a week after we met, we have just chosen to celebrate an "anniversary" on the day we met.

We spent a nice evening at home with a romantic carry-out dinner and our favorite TV shows and a movie. No presents were given this year, just time spent together reflecting on how much we mean to each other.

We look forward to our 7th year anniversary when we will get married on October 31, 2009. It will be a very fun and festive party, one that very much reflects our personalities. So save the date if you wold like to take a trip up to Michigan in October. Shouldn't be too cold - prob in the 50-60's; and hopefully the fall colors will still be around! (Rock-Chicks this is an event not to be missed if you would like to be "red carpet" interviewers!)

Hazy Shade of Winter

Winter has not been to harsh on us yet this year, but in salute of the Bangles song and the winter season, I have changed over to a blue motif. Happy Bunny still says it all though.

I LOVE DISCO!

I don't know what it is about it, but I LOVE DISCO! It get me going and motivates me. I have heard that if you feel drawn to a specific period of time or certain interest - like Disco, Vampires, and the Renaissance - then it is possible that you lived former lives during those times.

I SOOOOO think I was a disco queen (not a "Queen") who died of an overdoes on the dance floor; which would explain my quick reincarnation in 1978.

Bah Humbug

So I love the holidays, don't get me wrong. I love getting gifts for the people I love; this should be my favorite time of year as one of my love languages is gifts. But, I am a little soured this season due to the extremely high rate of gift giving in my office.

In years past, I have always received gifts from my supervisors. In my last UofM job, I think I even started up the "Secret Santa" thing because there really was no other gift giving in the department.

This year in my new department this is what has been asked of me:
1. Contribute money to buy gift cards for our three student temps who work for us (no problem $10)
2. Contribute a hard item for a gift basket for our custodian (no problem - he is cool and going to be a fireman, I can get him a free t-shirt or something from my uncle - $15 gift card & a fire patch)
3. Spend $15 on a secret Santa gift for someone in the office (no problem - gift certificate & bookmark)
4. Contribute money to a group gift for the boss (what???)
5. Contribute money to a group gift for the department chair (wa-wa-wa-WHAT!)

So, in the past year I have gone from getting gifts from my boss to giving gifts to my boss and making $2,000 less than what I was two years ago! I have been asked by my coworkers to spend $60 on people in the department when I haven't even the money to spend that much on my each of my family members this year! My mom is getting a $10 book from the Borders Bargain table and a hand made scarf!!!

Needless to say I vetoed the contributing to the boss and chair. When I asked my mom about this she said it was highly improper to present a group gift to bosses and chairs, especially when they make more money than you! (per Emily Post). And I agree.

Your thoughts?

Arrrr.....

My pirate name is:

Black Charity Flint

Like anyone confronted with the harshness of robbery on the high seas, you can be pessimistic at times. Like the rock flint, you're hard and sharp. But, also like flint, you're easily chipped, and sparky. Arr!

Veterans Day - "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition"

I found this quote on the Yale University Press web site yesterday while processing a book order. I shared it with some friends and received the following history lesson behind it. I thought I would continue to share it with you all as the troops on campus are celebrating Veterans Day today.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"the rest ofthe story", as given on http://my.execpc.com/~dschaaf/praise.html
"Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition"; was written by FrankLoesser. According to the song a chaplain ("sky pilot") was with some fightingmen who were being attacked by an enemy. (Generally given at the time to be theJapanese at Pearl Harbor.) He was asked to say a prayer for the men who wereengaged in the firing at the on-coming Japanese planes. The chaplain; the songwent on to infer, put down his bible, manned one of the ship's gun turrets andbegin firing back, saying, "Praise The Lord and pass the ammunition".
Now; however, there are now facts available setting the story straight.
According to the writer, Jack S. McDowall, through the years the lyrics of thesong have generally credited "a chaplain" manning the gun turrets of a ship,while under attack. "This was not true". says, McDowell.
For some time, long after the attack at Pearl Harbor, stories and reportscontinued to pop-up about the incident, involving a chaplain who was to haveuttered the now famous words, "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition."
These stories eventualy made their way through the servicemen back to thepress. The press, as McDowell noted, . . . led some writers erroneously toidentify other chaplains as authors of the phrase.
Nonetheless, the real Chaplain, Howell Forgy, aboard the U.S.S. New Orleans;during the Japanese attack, was that Chaplain. He was a Lieutenant (j.g.) onthat Sunday morning in December, 1941.
Another Lieutenant who had been in charge of an ammunition line on the USS NewOrleans during the attack remembered.
"I heard a voice behind me saying, Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. Iturned and saw Chaplain Forgy walking toward me along the line of men. He waspatting the men on the back and making that remark to cheer them and keep themgoing. I know it helped me a lot, too", he said.
Another Lieutenant j.g. said, the men aboard the USS New Orleans wouldthereafter kid Chaplain Forgy about the role he played whenever they heard thesong that had been written. They also encouraged him to set the record straightas to who actually said what. According to that same Lieutenant the Chaplainwould decline saying he felt "the episode should remain a legend rather than beassociated with any particular person."
Author McDowell said that press reporters were eventually permitted tointerview men of the U.S.S. New Orleans involved in the "ammunition" story.Chaplain Forgy's superior officers set up a meeting with some of the press and;at last, the the real story of the wonderful song and the wonderful man who hadinspired it was finally confirmed.
The preceeding information was provided by Henry Wristen, President of theU.S.S New Orleans (CA-32) Reunion Association."Pearl Harbor: Remembered" Web site thanks him.
The Song
Down went the gunner, a bullet was his fate
Down went the gunner, then the gunners mate
Up jumped the sky pilot, gave the boys a look
And manned the gun himself as he laid aside The Book, shouting
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition and we'll all stay free!
Praise the Lord and swing into position!
Can't afford to sit around and wishin'
Praise the Lord we're all between perdition
and the deep blue sea!
Yes the sky pilot said it
You've got to give him credit
for a son - of - gun - of - a - gunner was he,
Shouting;
Praise the Lord we're on a mighty mission!
All aboard, we're not a - goin' fishin;
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition and we'll all stay free!
Diversity Matters at Michigan
University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman pledged Wednesday to continue the fight for diversity, vowing that the University will “consider every legal option available.”
